Unified Martial Art Academy is a Jeet Kune Do school. Jeet
Kune Do (JKD), is the personal combat philosophy of the late
martial art legend, Bruce Lee. JKD training develops a
well-rounded ability as a martial artist and a well-rounded personality as a
human being. Well-roundedness for us means skill in long range, middle range
and close quarters. It also means skill in standing fighting and ground
fighting. It means physical, emotional, mental and spiritual development.
As Bruce Lee said, "You must practice the physical aspects of JKD right
alonsgside the philosophical aspects. Otherwise it's just fighting and any old
fool can pick a fight!"
The major martial art methods we use at UMAA are:
Jun Fan Gung Fu/Kickboxing
Filipino Kali
Muay Thai (Thai Boxing)
JKD Grappling
Fitness Kickboxing
Junior JKD
Lil' Dragons JKD
Jun Fan Gung Fu/Kickboxing
The precursor to the later named Jeet Kune Do, this is the non-classical Chinese martial
art which Bruce Lee taught in the 1960s. It is a blend of several martial arts including Wing Chun Gung Fu (the system
which Bruce Lee studied before coming to the uSA), Western Boxing, Fencing, Eskrima, Northern and Southern styles of
gung fu, Muay Thai, and French Savate. In our 4 weekly Jun Fan classes students are divided into beginner, intermediate
and advanced levels.
Filipino Kali
The ancient native art of the Philippine Islands which promotes the use of weaponry to develop superior
body mechanics for armed and unarmed combat. The natives of the southern Philippines remained unconquered for almost
400 years due to their deadly fighting skill in Kali. As in the Jun Fan program, Kali students are grouped by skill
level. We teach 4 weekly Kali classes.
Muay Thai (Thai Boxing)
The national art of Thailand, Muay Thai is often referred to as the "the Art of Eight Weapons"
(fists, elbows, knees, legs) indicating wherein lies its technical base. Although a ring sport, Muay Thai's emphasis
on power, finesse, speed and endurance make it equally effective for self-defence. In our
3 weekly Muay Thai classes
we teach all levels simultaneously.
Grappling
Grappling is one of the most multi-faceted arts taught at UMAA. Our method is a blend of
Maphilindo Silat,
Shoot
Wrestling, Brazilian Jiujutsu,
Catch-as-Catch-Can Wrestling, Jun Fan Gung Fu and
Pangamut. UMAA offers 2 weekly
Grappling classes. Grappling methods are also taught in the
Jun Fan, and Kali classes.
Fitness Kickboxing
Fitness Kickboxing is a tremendous workout for students of all levels. At UMAA "FKB" students learn techniques from
Muay Thai, Jun Fan Kickboxing, Western Boxing, Filipino Boxing, STX Kickboxing and French Savate. This is one reason
why UMAA has Miami's longest running martial art fitness program. Currently we have 4 morning,
2 afternoon and 4 evening Fitness
Kickboxing classes.
Junior JKD
Junior JKD is Bruce Lee's philosophy for the younger generation. Kids ages 7 &
8, 9 through 11 and 12 through 15 can train
2 times per week in age-specific classes.
Lil' Dragons JKD
Lil' Dragons JKD is another age-specific look at Bruce Lee's JKD. Kids ages 4 through
